Where are we?
Writing Prompt No. 130
She steps forward her foot slipping on the moss covered rocks. Her ankle rolls and she cries out.
“You okay?” says her sister.
“Just caught my ankle,” she says resting her hand against a tree and moving her foot around in circles. “I think it’s okay. Nothing serious.”
“It’s getting dark,” says her sister.
They move through the forest picking their way, their feet loosening leaves and rubble.
“Where’s all this coming from?” says her sister, kicking at a broken brick.
“Don’t know. It’s like a building site that’s overgrown.” She kicks too at a piece of brick and mortar. It makes a rough abrasive sound as it rolls over the cracked foundation of concrete in front of them.
“We should probably get back,” says her sister.
“Yes,” she says. “We probably should.”
“I think we came in from up there, just where you can see the sky.”
She looks to where her sister points and sees the sky turning pink from the setting sun.
“I’ll follow you,” says her sister.
They begin to climb up the embankment careful not to slip on the damp leaves under their feet. She holds back any thin low branches for her sister, stopping them from flicking back into her face.
“Thanks,” says her sister.
They reach the top as the pink sky bleeds into a dark navy blue.
“Which way now?” says her sister, turning her head left and right.
“I don’t know,” she says, “and now my phone’s died.”
