WRITING PROMPT NO. 176
Janet read the sign: Please shower before entering the pool.
She stood under the shower trying not to look at the variety of naked bodies around her.
The smell of sulphur drifted in through an open window. She didn’t want to do this. But it was Maureen’s hen weekend. When had it become a weekend? Just a few months ago they were going to celebrate her impending wedding with an evening out. Yet here they were in Iceland, naked together, about to get into hot thermal water.
Janet turned to face the shower wall rubbing soap over her arms, watching the water run into the drain beneath her toes.
“Come on, Janet. Why are you taking so long?”
Janet turned to see her group all out of the shower and dressed in their swimsuits. Flushed with embarrassment, she stepped out and grabbed her towel, wrapping it around her body as best she could. No one was looking at her, yet somehow she could sense them laughing. A few minutes later she joined them, pulling at her suit, making sure it didn’t reveal any perceived imperfections.
The water was wonderful. Hot, opaque and thick. Everyone sank into its milky thermal depths right up to their chins. They were a group of heads bobbing about in the pool. Janet made her way to a point where she had her back to the wall. A man in front of her had spread a layer of opaque spa mud all over his face and torso. As he dropped low into the water the mud on his body washed away leaving a sharp line along his jawline where the mud on his face remained.
