Writing Prompt No. 1

A breeze rippled through the air moving just the very tips of the trees.

Everywhere else was still. Silent.

“Did you find it?”

“Find what?”

“The penny you dropped.”

“I didn’t drop a penny.”

“You did. I saw it fall and roll down the path.”

Lilian looked down and around but saw nothing. She looked over her shoulder. The voice she’d heard had disappeared. They were getting worse. They would appear and start talking as if they’d been there all along. But no. Nothing. The branches above her head curled down. The breeze had turned into a wind. She pulled her jacket around her and felt in the pockets for her gloves. She found one. Not the other. How annoying. She walked on certain that the path she was taking was the right way.

“Did you find it?”

“Find what?”

“The penny you dropped.”

Before she could stop herself she said, “I didn’t drop a penny.”

The final sentence sounded faint and distant. She turned towards the voice. Nothing there. No one there. Her face tingled in the cold of the wind. She swapped her one glove to the other hand and walked on.
